Biography

Dr Freny Kalapesi is an Ophthalmic Surgeon with specialist training in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery. She completed her ophthalmology training in Sydney, primarily based at Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick, with rotations across major Sydney hospitals including Sydney Eye Hospital.
Dr Kalapesi also achieved a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at UNSW (2002–2007), undertaking basic laboratory ophthalmic research. Following her Australian training, she completed two years of subspecialty fellowship training in the United Kingdom. Her first fellowship at the Royal United Hospital, Bath focused on General Ophthalmology, including cataract surgery, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, strabismus and paediatrics, while developing a strong interest in oculoplastics.

Dr Kalapesi undertook resident training at Westmead and Prince of Wales Hospitals in Sydney before completing her ophthalmology registrar training between 2005–2010.
She completed two years of subspecialty fellowship training in the United Kingdom, including General Ophthalmology at the Royal United Hospital, Bath and Oculoplastics and Orbital Surgery at the Bristol Eye Hospital. During her fellowship year in Bristol, she participated in five theatre sessions per week, gaining extensive surgical exposure to complex lid, lacrimal and orbital cases. She also contributed to the CIRTED Trial investigating treatment approaches for thyroid eye disease and coordinated multidisciplinary orbital meetings.
