Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)

Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) is a sophisticated vision correction procedure that enhances the eye’s natural optics without altering the cornea.

It is particularly well suited to patients with higher prescriptions or those seeking an alternative to laser-based treatments.

What Is ICL?

ICL involves placing a custom-designed lens inside the eye, positioned behind the iris and in front of the natural lens.

This lens works alongside the eye’s existing structures to correct refractive error, delivering sharp, high-definition vision while preserving the natural shape of the cornea.

Because the natural lens remains in place, the procedure is additive rather than subtractive – meaning it can also be reversed if required.

Suitability

ICL is often recommended for patients with moderate to high levels of short-sightedness or long-sightedness, particularly where laser procedures are less suitable.

It is also an excellent option for patients with dry eye or corneal characteristics that limit other forms of correction.

As with all refractive procedures, suitability is determined through a comprehensive assessment of eye health, anatomy and visual goals.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed as a day surgery under local anaesthetic.

A small incision is made to allow insertion of the lens, which is then carefully positioned within the eye. The incision is self-sealing and typically does not require stitches.

The process is controlled and refined, with a strong emphasis on precision and long-term visual quality.

Recovery & Aftercare

Visual improvement is often noticeable within a short period, with many patients experiencing significant clarity within the first few days.

Follow-up care ensures the lens remains correctly positioned and that the eye is adapting well. Recovery is generally comfortable, with minimal disruption to daily activities.

Outcomes

ICL provides exceptional visual quality, particularly in higher prescriptions. It offers a stable, predictable and reversible solution, making it a compelling option for selected patients.
