Dr Joanne Teong is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and an Australian and New Zealand trained Ophthalmologist. She studied medicine at the University of Notre Dame in Perth, Western Australia, and completed her ophthalmology training in New Zealand.
Following her specialist training, Dr Teong further developed her expertise in cataract surgery, retinal diseases, glaucoma and oculoplastics while working in regional Tasmania. She then completed a subspecialty Fellowship in Medical Retina at the renowned Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. During this time, she refined her skills in the management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases and complex cataract surgery.

Dr Teong completed her ophthalmology training in New Zealand before gaining further clinical experience in regional Tasmania, where she advanced her skills in cataract surgery, retinal disease management, glaucoma and oculoplastics.
She subsequently undertook a Medical Retina Fellowship at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, developing advanced expertise in the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases and complex cataract surgery.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr Teong plays an active role in ophthalmic education and assessment through her work with RANZCO’s Ophthalmic Sciences Examiners Committee.
Dr Teong believes in a warm, approachable and patient-centred style of care, where the patient’s best interests always come first. She values clear communication and shared decision-making, ensuring patients feel informed and supported throughout their treatment journey.
