Biography

Associate Professor Michael Hennessy has provided public and private sector eye care for over 22 years across a range of metropolitan, regional and remote settings. In addition to his private practice in Bondi Junction, he is a part-time Staff Specialist Ophthalmologist at the Eye Clinic at Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH).

During his time at POWH, A/Prof Hennessy has served as Director of Ophthalmology Registrar Training and has been part of the management team for both the Eye Clinic and the Outback Eye Service—an initiative delivering specialist eye care to rural and remote communities. His current public sector work also includes Lightning Ridge Health Service and Bourke Hospital, and he has previously practised at Griffith Base Hospital.

A/Prof Hennessy has extensive experience across public and private ophthalmology settings, including tertiary metropolitan hospitals and regional and remote health services. He has played a central role in ophthalmology training and service development at Prince of Wales Hospital and through the Outback Eye Service.

His clinical work includes cataract surgery, glaucoma management and laser procedures (SLT and YAG), as well as the management of macular degeneration and general ophthalmic conditions.

In addition to his clinical practice, he has contributed to the advancement of public ophthalmology services through health system redesign, referral pathway development and collaborative care models with optometrists and allied health professionals.
